Часть текста: was born as my age was that summer. You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns. 2 I was born in 1910, in Paris. My father was a gentle, easy-going person, a salad of racial genes: a Swiss citizen, of mixed French and Austrian descent, with a dash of the Danube in his veins. I am going to pass around in a minute some lovely, glossy-blue picture-postcards. He owned a luxurious hotel on the Riviera. His father and two grandfathers had sold wine, jewels and silk, respectively. At thirty he married an English girl, daughter of Jerome Dunn, the alpinist, and granddaughter of two Dorset parsons, experts in obscure subjectspaleopedology and Aeolian harps, respectively. My very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when I was three, and, save for a pocket of warmth in the darkest past, nothing of her subsists within the hollows and dells of memory, over which, if you can still stand my style (I am writing under observation), the sun of my infancy had set: surely, you all know those redolent remnants...

Часть текста: inaccuracies. These I have tried to weed out ten years later but was forced to strike out a few sentences here and there when memory refused to restore the sense flawed by defective or improperly mended speech. The poem I quote (with metrical accents added) will be found translated into English in Chapter Two of The Gift, G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1963. Would you ever go back to Russia? I will never go back, for the simple reason that all the Russia I need is always with me: literature, language, and my own Russian childhood. I will never return. I will never surrender. And anyway, the grotesque shadow of a police state will not be dispelled in my lifetime. I don't think they know my works there-- oh, perhaps a number of readers exist there in my special secret service, but let us not forget that Russia has grown tremendously provincial during these forty years, apart from the fact that people there are told what to read, what to think. In America I'm happier than in any other country. It is in America that I found my best readers, minds that are closest to mine. I feel...

Часть текста: de vanité il avait encore plus de cette espèce d'orgueil qui fait avouer avec la même indifférence les bonnes comme les mauvaises actions, suite d'un sentiment de supériorité, peut-être imaginaire. Tiré d'une lettre particulière   Not thinking to amuse the haughty world,   having grown fond of friendship's heed,   I wish I could present you with a gage   4  that would be worthier of you —   be worthier of a fine soul   full of a holy dream,   of live and limpid poetry,   8  of high thoughts and simplicity.   But so be it. With partial hand   take this collection of pied chapters:   half droll, half sad, 12  plain-folk, ideal,   the careless fruit of my amusements,   insomnias, light inspirations,   unripe and withered years, 16  the intellect's cold observations,   and the heart's sorrowful remarks. CHAPTER ONE To live it hurries and to feel it hastes. Prince Vyazemski I   “My uncle has most honest principles:   when he was taken gravely ill,   he forced one to respect him   4  and nothing better could invent.   To others his example is ...

Часть текста: time, measurable illusions of time, are useful for the purposes of historians or physicists, they do not interest me, and they did not interest my creature Van Veen in Part Four of my Ada. He and I in that book attempt to examine the essence of Time, not its lapse. Van mentions the possibility of being "an amateur of Time, an epicure of duration," of being able to delight sensually in the texture of time, "in its stuff and spread, in the fall of its folds, in the very impalpability of its grayish gauze, in the coolness of its continuum." He also is aware that "Time is a fluid medium for the culture of metaphors." Time, though akin to rhythm, is not simply rhythm, which would imply motion-- and Time does not move. Van's greatest discovery is his perception of Time as the dim hollow between two rhythmic beats, the narrow and bottomless silence between the beats, not the beats themselves, which only embar Time. In this sense human life is not a pulsating heart but the missed heartbeat. PERSONAL PAST Pure Time, Perceptual Time, Tangible Time, Time free of content and context, this, then, is the kind of Time described by my creature under my sympathetic direction. The Past is also part of the tissue, part of the present, but it looks somewhat out of focus. The Past is a...

Часть текста: atmosphere. Their suite of rooms is on the sixth floor, overlooking Lake Geneva, and the sounds of the lake are audible through the open doors of their small balcony. Since Mr. Nabokov does not like to talk off the cuff (or "Off the Nabocuff," as he said) no tape recorder was used. Mr. Nabokov ei! ther wrote out his answers to the questions or dictated them to the interviewer; in some instances, notes from the conversation were later recast as formal questions-and-answers. The interviewer was Nabokov's student at Cornell University in 1954, and the references are to Literature 311-312 (MWF, 12), a course on the Masterpieces of European Fiction (Jane Austen, Gogol, Dickens, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Stevenson, Kafka, Joyce, and Proust). Its enrollment had reached four hundred by the time of Nabokov's resignation in 1959. The footnotes to the interview, except where indicated, are provided by the interviewer, Alfred Appel, Jr. For years bibliographers and literary journalists didn't know whether to group you under "Russian" or "American. "Now that you're living in Switzerland there seems to be complete agreement that you're American. Do you find this kind of distinction at all important regarding your identity as a writer? I have always maintained, even as a schoolboy in Russia, that the nationality of a worthwhile writer is of secondary importance. The more distinctive an insect's...

Часть текста: A Novel in Verse by Aleksandr Pushkin Chapter four CHAPTER FOUR La morale est dans la nature des choses. Necker VII   The less we love a woman   the easier 'tis to be liked by her,   and thus more surely we undo her   4  among bewitching toils.   Time was when cool debauch   was lauded as the art of love,   trumpeting everywhere about itself,   8  taking its pleasure without loving.   But that grand game   is worthy of old sapajous   of our forefathers' vaunted times; 12  the fame of Lovelaces has faded   with the fame of red heels   and of majestic periwigs. VIII   Who does not find it tedious to dissemble;   diversely to repeat the same;   try gravely to convince one   4  of what all have been long convinced;   to hear the same objections,   annihilate the prejudices   which never had and hasn't   8  a little girl of thirteen years!   Who will not grow weary of threats,   entreaties, vows, feigned fear,   notes running to six pages, 12  betrayals, gossiping, rings, tears,   surveillances of aunts, of mothers,   and the onerous friendship of husbands! IX   Exactly thus my Eugene thought.   In his first youth  ...

Часть текста: left, Vladimir, Kirill, Olga, Sergei and Elena. 2. Exile 1919-1940 Exile in England After fleeing Russia, the family moved to England, where Nabokov attended Trinity College at Cambridge from 1919-1922. He began his studies in zoology but later focused on Russian and French literature. Death of his father Nabokov, shown in larger photo, spends the summer after his father's death at the home of Svetlana Siewert, his one-time fiancee. Nabokov's father, Vladimir Dmitrievich Nabokov (bottom right) was shot to death in Berlin while trying to stop right-wing Russian assassins from killing politician Pavel Miliukov in March 1922. Marriage to Vèra Nabokov and Vèra Slonim met in May of 1923 at a charity costume ball and later married in 1925 in Berlin. After settling down into marriage, Nabokov never purchased his own house, even with the great wealth and success of "Lolita." He claimed that after the loss of his home in Russia his only attachment was, in his terms, the "unreal estate" of memory and art. Birth of his son Nabokov's son, Dmitri, was born in May of 1934. Dmitri went on to become an opera singer but also helped his father translate early work to English. 3. America 1940-1960 Refuge in America...

Часть текста: 1964. Great trouble was taken on both sides to achieve the illusion of a spontaneous conversation. Actually, my contribution as printed conforms meticulously to the answers, every word of which I had written in longhand before having them typed for submission to Toffler when he came to Montreux in mid-March, 1963. The present text takes into account the order of my interviewer's questions as well as the fact that a couple of consecutive pages of my typescript were apparently lost in transit. Egreto perambis doribus! With the American publication of Lolita in 1958, your fame and fortune mushroomed almost overnight from high repute among the literary cognoscenti-- which you bad enjoyed for more than 30 years-- to both acclaim and abuse as the world-renowned author of a sensational bestseller. In the aftermath of this cause celebre, do you ever regret having written Lolita? On the contrary, I shudder retrospectively when I recall that there was a moment, in 1950, and again in 1951, when I was on the point of burning Humbert Humbert's little black diary. No, I shall never regret Lolita. She was like the composition of a beautiful puzzle-- its composition and its solution at the same time, since one is a mirror view of the other, depending on the way you look. Of course she completely eclipsed my other works-- at least those I wrote in English: The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, Bend Sinister, my short stories, my book of recollections; but I cannot grudge...
