И если в рассказе «Уста к устам» роман Ильи Борисовича послужил внутренней моделью для одноименного рассказа Набокова, то в романе «Отчаяние» дело обстоит сложнее, потому что «внутренний» текст (т. е. повесть Германа и его дневниковые записи) тождествен «внешнему» (т. е. роману Набокова). Нам остается ответить на вопрос, каким же образом сосуществуют под одним названием два произведения двух авторов, а также каким образом Набоков закрепляет за собой авторство. Рассмотрим сперва взаимоотношение двух писателей, пишущих одну и ту же книгу: Набокова и Германа.
