Nonetheless, even in my exceptionally propitious situation things were not easy: Russia, particularly in the north, dwelt in a mist, while the local lists, scattered through the journals, totally haphazard, scanty, and cruelly inaccurate in nomenclature, only maddened me when at last I ferreted them out. The result was printed, from our careful jottings, in the spring, 1971, issue of Novel, A Forum on Fiction, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. In the twelve years since the American publication of Lolita, you've published twenty-two or so books-- new American or Antiterran novels, old Russian works in English, Lolita in Russian-- giving one the impression that, as someone has said-- John Updike, I think-- your oeuvre is growing at both ends. Now that your first novel has appeared (Mashenka, 1926), it seems appropriate that, as we sail into the future, even earlier works should adhere to this elegant formula and make their quantum leap into English. Yes, my forthcoming Poems and Problems [McGraw-Hill] will offer several examples of the verse of my early youth, including "The Rain Has Flown," which was composed in the park of our country place, Vyra, in May 1917, the last spring my family was to live there. This "new" volume consists of three sections: a selection of thirty-six Russian poems, presented in the original and in translation; fourteen poems which I wrote directly in English, after 1940 and my arrival in America (all of which were published in The New Yorker), and eighteen chess problems, all but two of which were composed in recent years (the chess manuscripts of the 1940-1960 period have been mislaid and the earlier unpublished jottings are not worth printing). These Russian poems constitute no more than one percent of the mass of verse which I exuded with monstrous regularity during my youth. At our initial meetings I read from prepared cards, and this part of the interview is given below. The rest, represented by some fifty pages typed from the tape, is too colloquial and rambling to suit the scheme of the present book. As with Gogol and even James Agйe, there is occasionally confusion about the pronunciation of your last name. How does one pronounce it correctly? It is indeed a tricky name. It is often misspelt, because the eye tends to regard the "a" of the first syllable as a misprint and then tries to restore the symmetrical sequence by triplicating the "o"-- filling up the row of circles, so to speak, as in a game of crosses and naughts. No-bow-cough. How ugly, how wrong. Every author whose name is fairly often mentioned in periodicals develops a bird-watcher's or caterpillar-picker's knack when scanning an article. But in my case I always get caught by the word "nobody" when capitalized at the beginning of a sentence. As to pronunciation, Frenchmen of course say Nabokoff, with the accent on the last syllable. BUTTERFLIES Butterflies are among the most thoughtful and touching contributions to this volume. The old-fashioned engraving of a Catagramma- like insect is delightfully reproduced twelve times so as to suggest a double series or "block" of specimens in a cabinet case; and there is a beautiful photograph of a Red Admirable (but "Nymphalidae" is the family to which it belongs, not its genus, which is Vanessa-- my first bit of carping). ALFRED APPEL, JR. Mr. Appel, guest co-editor, writes about my two main works of fiction. His essay "Backgrounds of Lolita" is a superb example of the rare case where art and erudition meet in a shining ridge of specific information (the highest and to me most acceptable function of literary criticism). I would have liked to say more about his findings but modesty (a virtue that the average reviewer especially appreciates in authors) denies me that pleasure. His other piece in this precious collection is "Ada Described." I planted three blunders, meant to ridicule mistranslations of Russian classics, in the first paragraph of my Ada: the opening sentence of Anna Karenin (no additional "a," printer, she was not a ballerina) is turned inside out; Anna Arkadievna's patronymic is given a grotesque masculine ending; and the title of Tolstoy's family chronicle has been botched by the invented Stoner or Lower (I must have received at least a dozen letters with clarifications and corrections from indignant or puzzled readers, some of them of Russian origin, who never read Ada beyond the first page)....

Первая глава появилась в печати под названием «Ultima Thule» {117} в 1942 году («Новый журнал», 1, Нью-Йорк), глава вторая «Solus Rex» {118} вышла раньше нее в начале 1940 года (Современные записки, LXX, Париж). Предлагаемый читателю перевод, сделанный моим сыном при моем участии в феврале 1971, передает оригинал со скрупулезной точностью, вплоть до восстановления сцены, замененной в «Повременных записках» интригующими точками {119} . Быть может, закончи я эту книгу, читателям не пришлось бы гадать: шарлатан ли Фальтер? Подлинный ли он провидец? Или же он — медиум, посредством которого умершая жена рассказчика пытается донести смутный абрис фразы, узнанной или неузнанной ее мужем. Как бы то ни было, ясно одно: создавая воображаемую страну (занятие, которое поначалу было для него только способом отвлечься от своего горя, но со временем переросло в самодовлеющую художественную манию), вдовец настолько вжился в Туле, что оно стало постепенно обретать самостоятельное существование. В главе I Синеусов говорит между прочим, что перебирается с Ривьеры в Париж, на свою прежнюю квартиру; на самом же деле он переезжает в угрюмый дворец на дальнем северном острове. Искусство позволяет ему воскресить покойную жену в облике королевы Белинды — жалкое свершение, которое не приносит ему торжества над смертью даже в мире вольного вымысла. В главе III ей предстояло снова погибнуть от бомбы, предназначавшейся ее мужу, на Эгельском мосту буквально через несколько минут после возвращения с Ривьеры. Вот, пожалуй, и все, что удается разглядеть в пыли и мусоре моих давних вымыслов. Одно слово о К. Это обозначение несколько смущало переводчиков, так как по-русски «король»...
