Именно в связи с этим столь важное место занимает в романе книга героя, «Жизнь Чернышевского» Федора Годунова-Чердынцева, посвященная автору влиятельной теории «эстетических отношений искусства к действительности». Задача этой работы — анализ эстетической концепции романа Набокова, ее воплощения во вставных текстах (книгах героя), ее конкретных источников и общего смысла в контексте культуры 1930-х годов. Эстетическая концепция «Дара» полемически направлена против теории Чернышевского и против реалистической, или позитивистской, эстетики в целом. Согласно теории Чернышевского (в изложении Набокова), «искусство <…> есть замена, или приговор, но отнюдь не ровня жизни…» (266) [337] . В художественном мире романа Набокова литература и реальность приравниваются и взаимно обращаются. Такой операции подвергается и сам Чернышевский, герой книги Федора: «[Зина] настолько свыклась с его принадлежностью Федору и отчасти ей, что подлинная его жизнь в прошлом представлялась ей чем-то вроде плагиата» (230). Обращение литературы и реальности — процесс аналогичный и параллельный свободному обращению в романе прошлого и настоящего, России и Германии, реальности действительной и реальности воображаемой, «вещи» и «тени».
